It's 2025, & like most of us, I find myself thinking about humanity's most fascinating topics - artificial superintelligence (ASI). Working & building in sf, I feel like I have a front-row seat, & it's v exciting. The timeline keeps accelerating - what seemed decades away in 2010 now feels imminent, with capabilities dropping at a rate of about two years per year. (cool)

the nature of super intelligence
this is wild - these AI models start by learning from us, right? They're trained on our data, our research papers, our conversations (yikes), our creative works. & yet, somehow they're developing capabilities that feel completely foreign to human cognition. What fascinates me is this tension - how can something built from human knowledge grow to think in ways we can't even comprehend? It's like watching a child not just surpass their parents, but develop entirely new ways of seeing the world. When I work with AI tools, I'm often amazed by how they can take our knowledge & recombine it into insights that feel almost foreign. They find patterns in our data that we never noticed were there, & make connections across fields that human experts would never think to combine. This ability to transcend their training while still building on human foundations hints at something profound about the nature of intelligence itself - that perhaps true superintelligence isn't just about being faster or smarter, but about developing fundamentally new ways of understanding & manipulating information.path to asi
i think of it like this: the development of ASI isn't following any predictable path. It's more like watching a plant grow - nothing seems to happen for ages, & then suddenly - explosive growth. Working in tech & in sf, I've seen firsthand how capabilities that seemed impossible just months ago are now the norm. Every breakthrough we make teaches us something new about the nature of intelligence itself. From GPTs to diffusion models, every new architecture brings its own unique way of processing information & understanding the world. It's like discovering new species of minds, each with its own fascinating capabilities & limitations. What's particularly interesting is how we've moved from trying to brute-force everything with reinforcement learning to this more layered approach - like baking a cake where language models are the foundation & RL is just the 🍒 on top.what keeps me up at night (besides diablo 4)
here's what gets me thinking: as these systems become more capable, they're forcing us to question what makes us... ✨us✨. Is it our ability to think? To feel? To create? To experience consciousness? The way ASI development is making us examine our own intelligence feels like holding up a mirror to humanity. We're discovering that some things we thought were uniquely human - like creativity or strategic thinking - can actually emerge from pattern recognition & statistical learning. Yet there's something distinctly human that remains elusive to these systems. Maybe it's our ability to feel deeply, to experience consciousness, to have that ineffable quality we call qualia. It's p fascinating how humans & AI complement each other - we're terrible at remembering exact details but great at creative insights, while AI can memorize vast amounts but struggles with certain types of innovation. Every day I find myself swinging between "humans are based" & "neural networks are based" - but honestly, we are both just based.transformation of work & society
the impact of ASI won't just be about replacing jobs - it's about fundamentally transforming how we work & live. I think about this a lot as I watch various industries adapt to current AI tools. The changes are starting from the bottom up, gradually automating more complex tasks while humans remain in executive positions. (vertical agents rock) But what happens when ASI can outperform us in those roles too? What excites me most is the potential for ASI to create abundance. Abundance for humans, & abundance for AI. Jobs will become more creative, specialized, & less tedious by replacing the tasks that are repetitive & mundane. We'll be able to truly focus on areas that matter most to us; education, art, medicine, & hopefully, enter the space age in our generation.looking forward
As we stand at this technological crossroads, I can't help but feel optimistic. Yes, there are challenges ahead. Yes, there are risks we need to manage. But the potential for ASI to help us build a better future is incredible. I strongly feel like the development of ASI isn't just about creating smarter machines - it's about understanding ourselves better. Every advance in AI technology reveals something new about human cognition, consciousness, & creativity. It's becoming increasingly clear that studying AI might be one of the most polymathic endeavors possible - it touches everything from computer science to primatology to physics, because understanding intelligence means understanding... well, everything.a few last thoughts
We're living through one of the most significant transitions in human history.
